Retail made up just 3.8% of the top 50 agency's corporate event business in 2011, according to C&IT's State of the Industry Report 2012. This compares to 5.4% in 2010.

Despite the drop, key conferences and incentives are continuing to take place, although budgets remain an issue.

Ryman director of public relations Tina Fotherby told C&IT: "Conferences and incentives are such an important part of what we do. We buy keenly, but budgets have remained stable." However, she warned, transparent pricing is crucial: "Given the climate, there are no excuses for hidden surprises - everyone needs to be precise about costs."
