The Worldwide Partner Conference, which kicked off yesterday and is being streamed live, is being attended by thousands of Microsoft employees and corporate partners from 150 countries.

Speaking at the event in Toronto in Canada, Tami Reller, Microsoft’s vice-president for Windows, told delegates that Windows 8 would be "released to manufacturing" in August, before it was made publicly available by the end of October.

Chief executive Steve Ballmer delivered a keynote at the event’s opening session, describing 2012 as Microsoft's "most important year", when the software giant will attempt to reinvent itself and claw back market share from technology rivals such as Apple and Google.

Last month Microsoft held a 'secret' meeting at which it revealed details of its tablet computer.
