London venues slashing conference rates during Olympics

London is experiencing a surge in discounts on meeting and conference spaces available during the Olympics and summer months, according to venue-finding firm Conferences Group.

According to the group’s online finding service Conferences-UK.org, some four-star properties are offering room hire for as little as £100, with savings of up to 80%.

The trend is being driven in part by planners avoiding the UK capital because of concerns over congestion and the perception that meeting space will be over-priced, says the firm.

Simon Thompson, Conference Group’s co-founder and director, said: "Firstly, the hype that has surrounded the Olympics has heightened perception that companies looking for meeting space during this time would be priced out of London.

"In actual fact, since accommodation is naturally in greatest demand, mostly booked up by those attending the Games, hotels are now finding they are unable to offer residential conferences but still have considerable day meeting space available."

He said that some planners are postponing events or are sourcing meetings spaces outside of the South East, such as in the Midlands.

"We have had a number of enquiries from companies looking to make the most of the competitive rates being offered," he added. "It’s a solution that suits all and for those savvy enough to think how they can use meeting space to their advantage in the coming weeks, there are some good deals to be had."
