The computing giant sent out invitations to media and businesses inviting then to an event at an undisclosed venue in Hollywood. The invitations were scant on detail, but contained the tantalising line: "This will be a major Microsoft announcement – you will not want to miss it."
News of the event has sparked widespread speculation that Microsoft will reveal a tablet running its latest version of Windows; while it has also been suggested that the firm will announce an e-book deal, following a partnership with publisher Barnes & Noble, into which it invested $300m (£192m) in April.
As well as attempting to cut into Apple's share of the tablet market, a Microsoft tablet would also see the group take on Amazon’s Kindle and Google-powered hardware.
The Microsoft event pre-empts a Google event planned for 27 June, which is expected to mark the launch of Google’s first own-brand tablet.
