The role will see him help to promote the city as a destination for business event planners across the Netherlands and overseas.

Broekaart has extensive experience in the exhibition and events industry and until last year was director sales, exhibitions and events at Libéma. In a previous guise he was instrumental in the creation of Lego World in the Netherlands, which now attracts 75,000 visitors.

He said: "Conventions and other types of business meetings provide an enormous economic spin off to the city and its region. The acquisition of these conferences is an interest that is far more larger than the interest of MECC alone.

"When selling your city as the most suitable destination for business events, you can increase your chances significantly when all stakeholders work together and join forces. Through my membership in the board of MCB, I hope to deliver a positive value to the proposition of Maastricht as a convention city."
