ICCA reveals league table

Germany, Spain, the USA and France are among the top destinations that are visited by UK-based associations for their congresses, according to research into the UK market conducted by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) on behalf of trade show International Confex.

The Netherlands, Italy, Canada, Portugal and China also appeared in the top ten, while the UK took the number one spot.

The report also shows a leap in the number of association events being held in hotels, up from 55 in 2001, to 259 in 2010. This compares with convention centres and academic venues, which have seen the number of association events coming through their doors double over the same period.

September and June are the most popular months for the UK-based associations to stage their meetings, while December and January are by far the quietest months.

The vast majority of the meetings, 481, are annual events, followed by 159 meetings that are biennial.

Jonny Sullens, International Confex director, said: "We commissioned the research as we wanted empirical evidence of the importance of the UK association market. We had 959 responses from UK-based associations and we'll be working to bring as many of these to the show as possible."

International Confex will take place at Excel London, from 6-8 March 2012.
