The five-star luxury hotel, owned by the National Trust, was formerly operated by collapsed hotel chain Von Essen, which reportedly went into administration last year owing Lloyds and Barclays £300m.

It has 38 rooms, a summerhouse by the Thames, boathouse, heated pool, spa, Waldo’s restaurant and seven rooms with capacity for 120 theatre-style.

Investment

Both venues will be overseen by Chewton Glen’s managing director Andrew Stembridge.

"We will be working quickly on a capital plan which will see all bedrooms and public areas refurbished," said Stembridge. "There is a huge amount of infrastructure behind the scenes that also needs work, not to mention the various projects which will be shared with the National Trust, who has responsibility for the external upkeep of the buildings, whilst we, as the leaseholder for the hotel will be responsible for maintaining the interiors."
