British Airways will launch a daily Heathrow to Bologna service from 29 April 2012. Tickets will be available to book from 10 November 2011. Prices start from £139 return.

European destinations Barcelona, Brussels, Amsterdam and Rome are also each benefiting from another daily flight each from Heathrow during the peak summer season.

Meanwhile, Lufthansa is boosting its UK services to Berlin with daily services from Manchester and Birmingham to coincide with the opening of the new Berlin-Brandenburg "Willy Brandt" Airport in June 2012.

The new services are due to start on 3 June. Lufthansa vice president sales and services Europe Karsten Benz said: "The addition of more direct flights to Berlin reaffirms the importance of the UK within the Lufthansa network.

"The opening of the new Berlin-Brandenburg ‘Willy Brandt’ Airport next year provides new opportunities for Lufthansa to increase its offering to UK passengers. The new Manchester and Birmingham services will complement the existing three times daily London-Heathrow to Berlin service operated on behalf of Lufthansa by BMI."
