Virtual meetings to impact live events, say medical associations

More than a third (34%) of medical associations believe virtual meetings will take over congresses, according to new research presented at the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) World congress in Leipzig today.

Exactly half of respondents have a strategy for expanding a live event into a virtual event, despite networking opportunities being one of the main reasons for attending an event (40%).
More than half (55%) of the 30 medical associations surveyed have seen a decline in financial support from the pharmaceutical industry for exhibitions and congresses, and 55% have also seen a decline in direct financial support of delegates.
On a more positive note, 33% have experienced growth in attendance figures and 45% have seen numbers stabilise.
The study surveyed 27 European and 3 International medical associations with a total number of 274,000 delegates attending annual events for these associations.
