Mexico's meetings worth more than £11bn

Mexico's meetings industry is valued at $18.1bn (£11.3bn), according to new research presented at the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) World congress in Leipzig.

The country hosted 197,400 meetings in 2010, of which 131,000, or 66%, were corporate/business meetings.

Conventions and congresses accounted for 14%, incentives 3%, and trade shows and exhibitions 2%.

The majority of meetings were local (49%) and domestic (47%) business, with just 4% of meetings business coming from overseas.

Meetings generated 24.3m room nights, and there were 830,000 foreign attendees to meetings in Mexico in 2010.

Eduardo Chaillo, executive director meeting industry, Mexico Tourism Board, said: "At last we are able to demonstrate why we need commitment and investment in the meetings industry from the government."
