The Spanish hotel chain changed its name to mark the start of a new future for the company, which emerged from the economic crisis stronger than before.
Melia Hotels International chief executive Gabriel Escarrer unveiled the new corporate name yesterday (13 September) during an event at the Meliá White House hotel.
The company revealed its plans for 2012-2014 with a focus on global expansion in areas including Thailand, Vietnam and China.
The top ten hotel chains by number of rooms, according to research by MKG Hospitality, are:

- Wyndham Worldwide
- Marriott International
- Hilton Hotels
- Accor Group
- Choice Hotels
- Best Western
- Starwood Hotels & Resorts
- Carlson (holdings in Rezidor Hotel Group)
- Global Hyatt
