University of Leicester invests to better target conference sector

The University of Leicester has embarked on a major refurbishment of its Bowder Court 145-room accommodation area in a bid to attract more conference organisers.

The refurbishment – funded by the university – will complement the institution’s adjacent conference facilities, Gilbert Murray Hall, which is also undergoing redevelopment and is set for completion at the end of the year.

Bowder Court was built in 1992 to house students during term time and conference delegates during holidays and is currently rated three-star.

The project will see the replacement of all bedrooms’ en suite bathrooms, as well as the venue's kitchens.

Trevor Miller, the university's conference sales and marketing manager, said: "The upgrade of Bowder Court alongside the redeveloped conference facilities at Gilbert Murray will be a strong addition to our venue portfolio and provide our customers with an excellent conference facility."

The project is being managed in two phases and is slated for completion by the end of the summer 2012.

In May the university unveiled plans to transform an unused Grade II-listed building into a £14m conference centre and hotel.
