The venue, which can host up to 1,500 delegates, includes two large foyer areas for drinks receptions, exhibitions and networking.

There are also six syndicate rooms for team-building, training and workshops.

York & Scarborough Conferences business tourism marketing manager Laura Freer said:

"As well as hosting an estimated 350 events and 50 conferences a year, the new venue expects to bring an annual boost of between £9m and £11m to the York economy."

York Barbican conference & events manager Lisa Turton said: "Bookings and enquiries are coming in from a wide range of sectors including finance, government, associations and charities. The investment has paid strong attention to enhancing the conference and events facilities to ensure all our equipment is state of the art and we are looking forward to showcasing these facilities to all our new clients."
