IBM and Sony Ericsson leading the way for sustainability says Jack Morton producer

Jack Morton Worldwide senior producer Emma Fitzgerald has name-checked Sony Ericsson and IBM as sustainable event pioneers during the Sustainable Events Summit.

Fitzgerald said that the events industry is lacking direction on sustainability and still needs a financial reason to engage.

"We guide our clients step-by-step into sustainability. IBM and Sony Ericsson have really led the way in this area, considering aspects such as waste and picking green suppliers, throughout our discussions," she added.

Author Giselle Weybrecht added that no event can ever be 100% sustainable but stressed that more pressure needs to be put on corporates.

"If a corporation has a CSR policy and promotes themselves as sustainable but doesn't run sustainable events event organisers should call them up on it," she added.

Meanwhile, author and speaker Tristram Stuart said that event planners need to look at ways to ensure leftover food is eaten.

"There's no shortage of organisations that will handout leftovers to the homeless. It's worth seeking these out in your area," he added.

The Sustainable Events Summit is taking place today (13 June) at the Barbican Centre.
