Formally appointed as Eventia chairman during the association's annual general meeting at the Science Museum today (8 June), Rob Allen takes over from Universal World Events sales and marketing director Mark Saxby.
Meanwhile, COI's Hughes takes on the role of vice-chairman and will become chairman from 2012.
Hughes told C&IT he believed his involvement as a corporate member of the body would "encourage more corporates to get on board".
The association now has nine corporate members, including Cisco, Barclays and Linklaters, and is aiming to grow that number.
"To get clients to put their heads above the parapet and talk honestly about the issues is really important," added Hughes.
Plans for 2011-12
New chairman Allen said his plans for the coming year are:
- Increasing membership
- Greater collaboration with other bodies
- Best practice
- Quality not quantity
- Show a financial surplus
"We have had a tough year," added Allen. "But our costs have been down by roughly the same proportion as our turnover. The good news is our membership base has broadened."
Eventia signed up 67 new members last year and its total business membership now stands at 281, of which 29% are agencies, 37% partners, 2% groups, 14% overseas and 6% affiliates.
Meanwhile, new board members for the coming year are:
- Paul Hussey – BSI Meetings and Events
- Dale Parmenter – DRP Group
- Emma Cashmore – Axis Travel Marketing
- Alison Ayling-Hogberg – De Vere Hotels (re-elected)
Co-opted members are:
- Andrew Wright – FAB!
- Matt Storey – Gallowglass
- Pauline Houston – Carlson Wagonlit
- Rory Sloan – RPM
They join continuing board members Alan Newton (Grass Roots), Karen Rice (Banks Sadler), Brian Kirsch (Event Assured), Mike Jackson (Stage Electrics), Rick Stainton (Smyle) and Mark Sale (Air Partner).
"We were delighted with the number and quality of people who put themselves forward to join the Eventia board," said immediate past chair Saxby. "The voting was incredibly close."
