HSBC director of corporate sustainability Maggie Crompton joined a panel of judges including Takeda Pharmaceuticals European medical education director Nigel Glover and Zibrant project implementation manager Richard Parker.

Vantage Point managing director John Denham and Powwow Events founder Amanda Edgcumbe were also on the judging panel for the event at the Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre in Westminster, London.

A team of three Leeds Metropolitan University events management students beat off competition from their peers to win the annual award, which is sponsored by the Switzerland Convention and Incentive Bureau.

The winning team:

Christelle Sears
Emma Heslington
Sophie Renshaw

Teams had to propose a fictional itinerary in Switzerland for a group of 50 delegates from the financial services industry to include conferencing elements, as well as team-building and incentive ideas.

The Leeds Metropolitan University third year undergraduate students proposed an event in Lucerne with the theme The Sky is the Limit.

Activities included a cable car up Mount Rigi, a cruise on Lake Lucerne, tandem mountain biking, an Alpine Olympics event, awards dinner and a gala event at Lucerne’s planetarium.

The team selected the four-star Seehotel Hermitage Luzern, which has five lakeside meeting rooms and is ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified.

MPI past president and organiser Paul Cook said: "The students of today are the buyers of tomorrow. This is about working together and developing the industry."

The judges praised the winning team for its focus on research. The students had carried out first-hand questionnaires with employees in the financial services sector, as well as focusing on CSR and the return on investment of the event.

The finalists:

University of Westminster
Event School London
Sheffield Hallam University
Leeds Metropolitan University
University of Surrey
