Inaugural US trade shows AIBTM and Imex America could attract up to four fifths of UK events professionals, according to results from a C&IT poll.

A total of 79% of respondents to C&IT's online poll are set to attend one of the new shows this year, with 54% planning to visit Imex America in Las Vegas on 11-13 October. A total of 25% of respondents are planning to attend AIBTM in Baltimore on 21-23 June, while 17% say they will be sticking with the European shows.

Just 4% have yet to decide whether they will visit the US for the new exhibitions this year.

Hosted buyer registration for Imex America began from 6 June and Imex Group chairman Ray Bloom said more than 2,000 hosted buyers are forecast to attend the show.

"We have greatly exceeded the scale of the show," said Bloom. When the show was launched in 2009 a total of 1,500 hosted buyers were being targeted, of whom 80% were expected to attend from within the US, with the remainder coming from the UK, Germany, Asia and Latin America.

Meanwhile, AIBTM had registered 1,000 hosted buyers to the end of May but had forecast achieving 2,000.

AIBTM project director Steve Knight said: "It is looking like we are heading towards optimum numbers for both buyers and suppliers and the split is currently 14% corporate, 24% associations and government meeting planners, and 53% agency."
