However, the increase recorded in the Meeting and Event Barometer 2011 follows a drop of 10.9% in 2009.
In 2010, a total of 323m delegates attended events in Germany, of whom 5.8% were international participants. The figure is up from 302m the previous year.
The Meeting and Event Barometer 2011 was unveiled at Imex today and German Convention Bureau managing director Matthias Schultze said: "This is a strong result because in 2008 – before the crisis-induced decline of events in Germany in 2009 – the market segment was at a very high level."
Meanwhile, 67% of surveyed event organizers said they had bigger budgets in 2010 than the previous year, with the rest reporting fewer resources.
The survey was conducted by the European Institute for the Meetings Industry and commissioned by EVVC, the German National Tourist Board and the German Convention Bureau.
Results have been compiled from questionnaires carried out in March 2011 with around 4,000 suppliers including convention centres and hotels, and 11,000 corporate, agency and association meeting planners. Around 5% returned results.
The report notes: "The optimism of the industry has returned. More events, more participants and larger budgets underline the fact that the worst of the economic crisis has long passed."
