Centara, which has hotels in Thailand, China and India, has formed an energy saving committee which will oversee energy use strategies and waste water treatment projects across its hotels.

Centara Hotels & Resorts senior vice president for project management Thirayuth Chirathivat said: "We approach conservation in a very serious way, giving equal weight to our programme that we apply to all other aspects of our business.

"We invite our guests to participate in this programme, for example by reducing the changing of towels and bed sheets, and making donations for environmental projects."

He added that the investment will be recouped in cost savings within three years.
