Pre-event planning: Home shopping business Kleeneze holds an annual incentive to motivate and reward its salesforce of more than 10,000 self-employed distributors. Kleeneze's agency, Gullivers, researched a number of venues, including the Langham and Renaissance hotels, before choosing the five-star Grand Hyatt on Wan Chai, Hong Kong Island.
A DVD for the event was then filmed on site and used at the launch of the incentive at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham in January 2010. This was followed by a ten-month qualification period where employees had to demonstrate team-building skills and evidence of sales growth to win one of 200 places on the trip.
Challenges: The sales incentive is an annual event and each destination has to outperform previous ones, which have included Thailand, Mauritius and South Africa, as well as cater for the large number of attendees. In addition, a VIP group of 20 senior executives arrived a day earlier than the rest of the group, and their expectations needed to be catered for accordingly.
Solutions: "We have to continuously offer the wow factor and our agency needs to make proposals including the popular attractions but always with some hidden gems," says Mandy Brinkman, corporate events manager at Kleeneze. "The VIP group dined at Hutong on the first night, a restaurant with dazzling views of the Victoria Harbour skyline, offering a contemporary slant on traditional cuisine in a modern minimalist setting - perfect for executives."
The next day, the VIP group was treated to a Champagne cruise aboard the Grand Hyatt's private yacht, which came as a complete surprise.
During their stay, all 200 delegates enjoyed a ride on the Peak Tram with lunch at Cafe Deco, which was hired on an exclusive basis. A gala dinner was held in the Hyatt's ballroom on the final night. Groups also visited sights including Repulse Bay and the giant seated Buddha on Lantau Island.
Post-event analysis: Brinkman says the event met the brief perfectly and the on-site interview feedback was generally "the best yet".
