The events industry, sustainability practitioners and standard experts can provide comments on the draft sustainability in event management standard through the British Standards Institution website.

Sustainable Events managing director Fiona Pelham, who is chair of the ISO technical committee that develops ISO 20121, said: "Everyone is encouraged to engage with their national standards body or one of the liaison bodies and share their feedback. The international working group has delivered an outstanding draft international standard and now is an opportunity for everyone to get involved with the development of sustainability within the event industry."

A total of 29 participating countries, nine observing countries and six association bodies are part of the working group for ISO 20121.

Recent meetings held in Tokyo and San Francisco included representation from Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Japan, Norway, Spain, Sweden, UK, USA and bodies including Meeting Professionals International and The Green Meetings Industry Council.

British Standards Institution quality and security team leader José Alcorta, who is joint secretariat for the ISO 20121 working group, said: "This standard has been developed according to typical timelines when the starting point is a robust working draft, in this case BS8901. The international working group experts have provided relevant contributions and participated well."

ISO 20121 is expected to be finalised in 2012 to coincide with the London Olympics.
