His remit will be to promote the cricket ground as a corporate event venue, managing existing clients and seeking new business.

Kenton was formerly business development manager at Twickenham Stadium, which he joined in March 2010.

Lord’s has capacity for 1,000 delegates, with spaces including the Pavilion Roof Terrace for al fresco receptions.

Kenton said: "I am excited to be spearheading the development of the events sector as we open the doors to one of London’s best-kept secrets."

Marylebone Cricket Club assistant secretary of marketing and catering Jon Robinson said: "Nick comes with a great heritage of promoting meeting and event spaces at sporting destinations and will play a key role in developing the private and corporate events revenue stream."
