The event takes place in March 2012 and brings together thought leaders, economists and entrepreneurs from more than 100 countries. More than 400 people are expected to take part, with hundreds more attending the event and its fringe activities.

Global Entrepreneurship Congress has previously been held in Kansas and is run by US-based Kauffman Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation.

The bid for the congress was lead by Liverpool Vision, the city’s economic development company, beating competition from UAE, Chile and Denmark.

Max Steinberg, chief executive of Liverpool Vision, said: "The significance of this for Liverpool cannot be underestimated and the effects of the Global Entrepreneurship Congress selection committee choosing our city will ripple for many years to come. We want to create the conditions in which innovators and entrepreneurs can thrive and that has never been more important than now".
