Intensive training

The new five-star Layla, which has 84 rooms including 19 suites and a presidential suite, will have a soft opening on 16 June and staff will go through an "intensive training and motivation programme" before the launch, said Worldspan Motivation business development director Kirsty Dean.

"It is a five-star hotel with a very specific idea of what the guest experience will be," said Dean. "We need to make sure the senior management team is on board with that, plus we will be doing all the training and motivation for 100 staff."

Small, intensive workshops will take place with senior management, while other employees will also undertake technical and behavioural training.

Ongoing motivation

An ongoing motivation programme will include regular recognition and reward, added Dean.

The £30m hotel is being created across three buildings in Liverpool – including the Grade II-listed former City Education Offices and Municipal Annexe.

Conference facilities include a ballroom for up to 200 delegates theatre-style, an executive lounge for 40 theatre-style, and a private screening room for up to 40.

Liverpool history

Worldspan Group managing director Sophie Morris – who took up the role in January after 17 years at the agency – said the development of the brand had included a focus on the history of Liverpool.

She added that all three of the agency’s divisions – motivation, creative and events – had "come together on the project".

"We will also be working on the launch event with the Layla hotel," said Morris.
