
Visitors have been advised to avoid all non-essential travel to the city, where a state of emergency has been declared, according to Tourism New Zealand.
Aftershocks are likely to continue and could lead to further building damage or collapse, the New Zealand Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management said in a statement.
All other South Island and New Zealand airports are open.
