AECC is looking for candidates with experience in the energy sector, finance, academia, or in the conference and events industry to help attract further events to the venue.

The venue currently hosts around 700 events each year, and is investing £1m this year in a temporary exhibition space to hold the Offshore Europe show in September.

AECC chairman Ed Gillespie said: "This is an exciting opportunity during a challenging time to contribute to the venue’s achievement of its objectives and to realise its full potential."

Last year, Aberdeen City Council extended the deadline on a £7.5m loan to the AECC - due within the next two years - to 2017.

It has been undergoing a restructure of its board and last month chairman and Aberdeen City Council representative Neil Fletcher stood down.

He has been replaced by Gillespie, the former chairman of Aberdeen's Glencraft furniture factory.
