Cardiff Council admits dedicated convention centre is critical but too expensive

Cardiff Council has supported arguments from local businesses about the necessity to build a convention centre in the city, saying there are funding issues, but it is still an aspiration.

Independent councillor Adrian Robson has urged Cardiff Council to build a conference centre as part of its Local Development Plan, a 15-year vision for the city currently being drawn up by planning officers.

However, Council Leader Rodney Berman said in the current financial climate the council cannot afford to build a new facility but is investigating ways to get the project greenlighted.

"The Executive has consistently championed the case for a conference convention centre and recognises fully that this is a critical piece of business infrastructure that will reap a significant dividend for the local economy."

"Research has confirmed that the cost of delivering a new conference centre for Cardiff ranges from £35m to £140m, depending on the size and range of facilities to be provided. Business planning has also confirmed that this capital cost cannot be funded from the revenue derived from the operation of a conference centre."

The Conservative Party recently confirmed it will hold its Spring Forum in Cardiff.
