Why Cancun

Cancun's activities and attractions make it an ideal incentive destination, with new air routes opening it up to the UK market. Business groups will find plenty of venue options among the Mexican city's convention centre and hotel conference spaces, as well as countless places for delegates to dive, sail and play golf.

Getting there

BA launched a direct flight from Gatwick to Cancun International Airport in November. It currently operates on Wednesdays and Saturdays, increasing to three times a week in March.

Where to stay

Cancun's hotels are mainly located by the 17-mile stretch of beach known as the Hotel Zone, which offers more than 27,000 rooms, 75 per cent of which are rated five-star. These include the 365-room Ritz Carlton Cancun, which has more than 3,000m2 of event space, a range of restaurants and a spa. For larger groups, the JW Marriott Cancun Spa and Resort has 448 rooms and more than 1,860m2 of event space. Le Blanc Spa Resort is located 25 minutes from the airport. It has 260 rooms, five restaurants, five bars, three outdoor pools and a spa.

Where to meet

The Cancun Convention Centre is located in the heart of the Hotel Zone, close to a wealth of nightclubs and bars for post-meeting entertainment. The centre features 13 column-free rooms that can be split into 37 spaces, and 14,200m2 of exhibition space. Cancun Messe is six miles south of Cancun International Airport and offers 21,691m2 of indoor exhibition space. Quirkier options include Xcaret, an 'eco-archaeological' park by the sea with exclusive event spaces for between 20 and 1,600 delegates.

Incentive ideas

Incentive activities include swimming with whale sharks in Holbox, diving in Cozumel's barrier reef, learning about ancient pirate history in Isla Mujeres, enjoying the Contoy Island's bird sanctuary and exploring Puerto Morelos's underground river system. The Cancun Underwater Museum opened in December, with 400 sculptures for delegates to discover while snorkelling or diving. The Tequila Herradura Sensory Museum opened last year and the ancient city of Chichen Itza, 125 miles west of Cancun, is also a must-see.

Where to eat and drink

For refined Mexican food, try Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Cancun Resort and Spa's La Joya restaurant. It offers live music and performances by the Folkloric Ballet and a menu of 150 tequilas. At the exclusive Puerto Madero Argentinean restaurant, delegates can enjoy chargrilled steak and seafood on its lagoon-side deck. Cancun's hotels also provide a range of high-end options. JW Marriott Cancun Resort and Spa boasts six speciality restaurants. For VIPs, try the Ritz Carlton Cancun's Culinary Centre, where 12 delegates can enjoy a five-course meal with chef Rory Dunaway.
