The series will include eight world-level events, three European-level championship events and 20 national championships.

Events will include the English Open table tennis championships at EIS Sheffield, the 2011 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships at the Motorpoint Arena and the FINA World Diving Cup at Ponds Forge, where Tom Daley is expected to compete.

Sheffield International Venues (SIV) events general manager Dominic Stokes said: "From a C&I perspective, this will be a key driver. Having a sporting event as a hook offers us a wider appeal and ties in well with 2012. Sport sells, but it also allows us to demonstrate to any event organiser that we can do it – it puts us in the market as major event providers."

Sheffield City Council councillor Paul Scriven said: "This is a world-class sporting programme. It gives us all a terrific boost going into 2011 and sets a benchmark of where we want to be as an international sporting destination of choice."
