Houston has been executive director at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry since 2008, before which he worked at Limerick Racecourse, Haydock Park Racecourse and Headingley Stadium.

HIC’s former director Stuart Quin left earlier this autumn after five years in the role.

Houston said he had a "clear goal to drive, develop and sustain the business".

"The UK events market is fiercely competitive, with all major cities recognising the validity of event venues as business tourism and economic impact drivers," he added . "Harrogate had foresight in the past to develop such facilities and I am determined to ensure HIC as a venue and Harrogate as a destination remains a primary choice for large conferences, events and exhibitions."

HIC kicked off a £13m expansion programme in August that will see it add 3,300sqm of event space.

Harrogate Borough Council’s leader Mike Gardner said: "I am confident that Angus can define and drive a strategy to boost commercial viability and long term development of the site."
