An initial list of 23 agencies was whittled down to seven in August, before a rigorous process examined each in thorough detail, said O2 head of events John Worthington.

Agencies pitched together, but were classified as either a large production agency or small event agency.

Incumbent agency Sledge has worked with O2 for seven years, while Ice London has worked with the telecommunications company for around 18 months.

The work for 2011 is still in planning stages but will include all O2’s conferencing as well as its external experiential activity,

"The process has run for over a year," said Worthington. "Everyone who pitched deserved our full attention and, as you can imagine, to examine each RFI in detail took some time to complete. We are confident that we have the right partners across both categories to deliver our events strategy in 2011."

The two contracts awarded are to be reviewed on an annual basis.
