Russia beat England, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Portugal in its bid to host the event, it was announced yesterday.

Manchester-based Definitive Events managing director Lisa Pennington said: "We are very disappointed it is not coming to the UK but we do lots of events around the world and hopefully we will still have opportunities in Russia."

Sportsworld chief executive Chad Lion-Cachet said: "We are naturally disappointed that England was not successful, particularly given the enormous effort that went into the bid proposal and presentation. Having said that, we believe Russia offers exciting opportunities and we look forward to offering packages to Russia just as we did to South Africa."

Keith Prowse head of marketing Ted Walker said: "The arrival of the Fifa World Cup would have put a seal on a historic decade of sport in the UK and it is regrettable we were not able to fulfil our potential as host country in 2018."
