Thailand expecting 20% MICE increase in 2011

Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau president Akapol Sorasuchart has talked up a 20% recovery for the country's MICE market, after violent clashes deterred £100m worth of business travel.

Speaking at an event at Lancaster London Hotel on Friday (26 November), Sorasuchart said the country's state of emergency is expected to be lifted by the end of 2010.

Violence between police and anti-government protesters in the south of Thailand last May caused an 11% dip in business tourism.

"We've seen a great improvement in MICE tourism in the last quarter of this year, but we estimate the £45bn MICE market was hit by £100m because of the troubles," said Sorasuchart.

"Meetings and incentives are making a very strong return. The fall in income last year is hard to estimate as you also have to factor in the general slump in European meeting market,' he added.

Sorasuchart went on to reveal that a new convention centre in Phuket is currently being planned, with full details expected to be revealed in late 2011.
