Yorkshire has hit its annual business tourism target six months ahead of schedule, securing £1.8m of C&I business since April 2010.

The figures follow the launch of Welcome to Yorkshire’s business tourism plan to boost C&I sales earlier this year, working with Conference Leeds, York & Scarborough Conferences, Hull and East Yorkshire Conferences and Yorkshire South Tourism.

The strategy aimed to increase Yorkshire’s conference bureaux’s C&I sales in the year ending March 2011 to £1.8m, up from £1.4m in the previous year.

C&I sales target

However, the bureaux’s sales reached the target last month, seeing the total delegate spend in the county reaching £7.2m for the same period.

The initiative included the appointment of new conference sales executives and a C&I-focused marketing campaign.

Welcome to Yorkshire chief executive Gary Verity said: "The figures highlight the importance of our investment in business tourism. In such tough economic times it is vital that Yorkshire continues to develop and invest in its conference offering to ensure it is top of the agenda for event organisers."

Yorkshire’s recent C&I developments include:

  • Leeds United Football Club’s £2m project to expand its conference and events facilities
  • The opening of the £25m Cedar Court Grand in York
  • A £6m investment in Scarborough Spa
  • The opening of The Chapter House in York Minster
