MPI members from ten countries met in Bruges today to discuss how to implement sustainability in events.
MPI’s CSR and sustainable events manager Roger Simons said key initiatives for the coming months were the launch of an online measurement tool and contents portal.
MCI Group sustainability director and incoming Green Meeting Industry Council president Guy Bigwood said: "It is about collecting data so we can show we can reduce costs through sustainability."
The tool, for event planners and suppliers, will allow the impact of events to be calculated through collecting data on all aspects of planning a conference or meeting.
"It’s the first step. It will get better and more solid as people start to use it," said Bigwood.
A lunchtime networking session at the forum will include discussions on getting clients more engaged with sustainability and the future of meetings.
Launching the forum last night at Bruges Concertgebouw, vice minister-president of the Flemish government Geert Bourgeois told more than 100 delegates governments must ensure destinations are accessible by public transport.
"More companies consider CSR of paramount importance and are looking for ways to do business in a sustainable manner," he added.
