During a session entitled ‘Convention 2020' at the Imex show in Frankfurt today, futurist Talwar said convention centres and venues must give more thought to their technology strategies.

"As a convention centre, are you going to go for a low-cost, basic model that says no to the latest technology, or are you going to partner with companies and outsource technology, or are you going to become a strategic innovator and have cutting edge technology that you create yourself and sell to clients?" he said. "It's becoming increasingly important to have a very clear technology strategy."

Talwar also said the events industry should bolster its efforts to analyse and make use of the data that it gathered before, during and after events.

He added that it would become crucial for the events industry to demonstrate its position as an engine of economic development.
