As sustainability takes centre stage in the events industry, experts offer 10 top tips on how to make events BS8901-compliant
UNDERSTANDING THE STANDARD
Purchase the standard. British Standards remains an independent standards making body due to sales of its standards.
Read the online case studies to learn how MPI, Earls Court and others are implementing BS8901. www.bsigroup.com/bs8901
- Understand that the standard is written in a typical standard way so may not be the most exciting thing you have ever read!
- Take part in industry education on this topic, for example, the next Positive Impact series starts in London and Manchester in March
- Ask your association for support. MPI, the AEO, AEV, ESSA and NOEA are all able to offer advice on BS8901 as their members are on the BS8901 panel.
IMPLEMENTING THE STANDARD
- Set targets and objectives to minimise the potential negative impact of your sustainability issues - every small step makes a difference.
- Consider the sustainability issues that you will be facing with your event - remember sustainability is social, economic and environmental, so more than just being green.
- Consider all the materials that you are bringing on site - where did they come from, what are they made of and what will their use be post-event?
- Work with your supply chain so they understand the importance of sustainability and can look to source sustainable alternatives.
- Measure your impact so you have a benchmark for future events. Useful tools can be found online at www.eventsustainability.com
