Glasgow nets trio of association events

Glasgow is celebrating a hattrick of conference wins with the news that Diabetes UK has committed its annual 2,500 delegate conference to the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre for three years from 2007. The gain comes on the back of the recent announcement that the city has picked up conference business worth £2.25m. The World Hydrogen Technologies Convention will be held at the SECC in 2011, while the University of Strathclyde hosts the 1,000 delegate European Academy of Forensic Science conference in 2009. Glasgow’s Ambassador Programme was instrumental in delivering these two events, with professors from Strathclyde University leading the pitches, assisted by the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau’s Convention Bureau. It is the first time that Diabetes UK has committed to three years in succession at one venue. Although the SECC has held the event in the past, it has been staged at other venues intermittently. The event will use the Clyde Auditorium for the main plenary with satellite symposia in the Loch Suite and an exhibition in Hall 4. Johanna Langrish, head of the conference team at Diabetes UK said: “The SECC’s facilities served us well when we held conferences at the venue in 2003 and 2005.”
