The development of an international version of BS8901 will commence on 18 January 2010.

ISO will develop the international sustainable event standard, ISO20121, and it is expected to be finalised in 2012 to coincide with the London Olympics. A new ISO project committee, ISO/PC 250, will produce the standard with around 30 countries already involved as participants or observers.

Chair of ISO/PC 250 Fiona Pelham explained: "The future ISO standard will make a great difference to the global events industry. Just imagine the change in thinking that could follow as the international event industry starts to systematically address their negative social, economic and environmental impacts."

The ISO proposal was submitted by the ISO member for Brazil (ABNT) and for the United Kingdom (BSI). Among the organisations to have expressed support for an international standard are the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, host of COP15.

It's going to be great for the BS8901 to finally be an ISO and be implemented worldwide.
