Sport Accord has chosen London to host its annual convention for the first time.
The 2011 Sport Accord Convention, the world's most prestigious sports summit, will take place at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, which is due to open early next year. It is expected to attract 1,500 international sporting officials.
The announcement was made by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson during the 2012 Business Summit at Excel London yesterday, where it was suggested that SportAccord would contribute at least £3m to the city's economy.
Johnson said the convention would showcase London's handling of major events in advance of the Olympics in 2012.
"This is a truly fantastic opportunity for the capital," he said. "Delivering a legacy for London after the Games is crucially important and Sport Accord will now play a significant role in helping us achieve this."
SportAccord is the new name of the General Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), which was founded in 1921. Its mission is to unite, support and promote sports federations around the world.
