The Sage Gateshead has won its bid to host an international healthcare conference that is anticipated to inject £500,000 into the local economy.

More than 500 delegates from all parts of the globe are due to attend the International Society for Priorities in Health Care conference on 28-30 October.

The conference was last held in the UK eight years ago and has since been hosted by Oslo, Wellington and Toronto. Newcastle University lodged a bid to bring the conference to Newcastle Gateshead two years ago.

Newcastle Gateshead Convention Bureau head of business tourism Jessica Roberts said the conference provided an excellent opportunity to showcase the destination to international delegates.

"Conferences of this nature can leave a lasting legacy as organisers and delegates involved return to their countries spreading the news about what our twin cities offer in terms of lifestyle, tourism, business and medical expertise," said Roberts.
