Set in almost 200 acres of parkland near Liverpool, the hotel was bought in December 2015 by HIG Capital. The phased improvements will include a new look for the hotel’s restaurant and bar, along with redecoration of its 62 rooms and the creation of 14 luxury loft rooms.

The health club and fitness studios will have the heated swimming pool extended and three new treatment rooms added, while the spa and bistro will also be completely revamped.

Andrew Pyle, general manager at Formby Hall, said: "There’s already been significant investment in the golf side of the resort and behind the scenes at the hotel within the first year of HIG Capital’s ownership, now we’ve moved on to the first phase of refurbishment and expansion."

Existing facilities at the hotel include a 72 par 18-hole parkland championship Old Course, a links style nine-hole Woodhey Dunes course, floodlit weatherproof driving range and the PGA Golf Academy.
